We all want to ski Mt ruapehu and would like both fields to be run by a single entity.
We envision any new entity being owned by current users and interested parties which include current Iwi investors, life pass holders, shareholders, local businesses, general mountain users as well as councils.
The dream to have Mt Ruapehu ski field as a business owned by passionate mountain users is not new. What has changed is that RAL lost their way over the last 70 years and forgot that in order to do that you have to provide what is required by the users. Today we are faced with the possibility of losing all that we have strived for in having access to the magic of our precious maunga. There is no question operating a ski business on Mt Ruapehu is extremely challenging and no privatised corporate model has survived for longer than 4 to 10 years. This is because any private enterprise needs to make a financial return for its shareholders. This is difficult to achieve on Mt Ruapehu and why the current RAL model which is really a charity, with no tax paid on the profits as they are reinvested back into the mountain.
For this fundraising campaign to succeed we believe it is essential that the same principle is applied to the new entity that takes control of RAL: honour life passes with a top up towards fundraising stays as a non profit organisation includes iwi representation includes all users no matter what association they have the Maunga
Other desired goals The new entity becomes a registered charity, which then allows for donations to be tax deductible
If we do not raise the funds required a multinational like Vail Corp could buy it and no more life passes, ever!
